Had plenty of these in the past...
Discuss anything to do with weight loss here?
One pound of fat equals 3,500 calories
I can walk about 300 calories per hour or 100 calories every twenty minutes
I plan to walk 20 days at twenty minutes per day during work days per month and 4 saturdays for an hour in a month
Total calories = 20X100= 2000 + 4 X 300= 3200
See if I can keep that up

Exercise is most helpful but not enough in my opinion.
The most effective way to lose weight is eating less high caloric food.
For me I have found that a low carbohydrate diet the most effective, by that I mean bread, cake, pastry and confectionary is a no go area in my diet.
Although I treat myself now and again on an irregular basis say twice or thrice a week. No more.
It gives me something to look forward to. It also means I am not totally denying myself.

I just went to the gym today and worked out a stretch and strength class. The gym gave me a 2 week trial and I hope to continue for the next two weeks. After todays class I worked out on the cardio machines for nearly an hour. But at home I had a tofu dessert so I think David is right, you have to control your diet as well as exercise.

I also find drinking something like three litres of water a day helps bloats my stomach in between peeing it out and makes me feel full.
And of course H2O has no calorie count.… What's more flushes one's kidneys out on a regular basis. Which does nothing but good!
Best of luck in your endeavours.... I for one knows it not easy but well worth it in the longer term.
What helped rather than hinder me was being diagnosed with type two diabetes. Eighteen moths on I have been told by my GP., I still have no need to take medication for same.

Not totally denying yourself is key - otherwise you can't keep up the regiment. You will crack and give in alltogether.

I think for me, exercise gives me the will to watch what I eat. IE I don;t want to ruin the work I did by exercising. Dieting alone/without exercise is impossible for me.

Sorry I was typing out a reply and your response post I was unaware of. Now making amends... Yes, exercise is most helpful Fleurette not just in losing weight but for our circulation also. But one with out the other doesn't amount to much when it comes to wanting to lose weight. Glad you are subscribing to the gym. over the next two weeks... hopefully you will find sufficient benefit to possibly continue down that road.

I did go to a gym for a while a while back but prefer to walking exercises for it gets me out and about in the fresh air and costs me nothing.
I find my shoes wear out sooner rather than later... but that's a small price to pay for the healthy activity I get from same.

I belive david is right. Exercise alone will not do it. We have to change the eay we eat. Exercise is good too though. Its a team of sort.

Pdoc put me on Topirimate which has a side effect of reducing appetite and it really does...it is an anticonvulsant but as all the othe dugs are notorious for weight gain I am on a winner here....I am not grazing all day.

Hey Sue, my pdoc put me on this also, and it does help. But at first, I still kept eating like normal. Had to relearn or teach myself that I wasn't hungry. Much better now. Now, I just need to get off all the weight I had already gained. I have a feeling that will be harder to do.

Not totally denying yourself is key - otherwise you can't keep up the regiment. You will crack and give in alltogether. This is very true Hercules. This is usually how my diets end. Plus, I get a bit weird...
One year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, my brother-in-law and I had a weight loss competition to see who could lose the most weight. His advantage is that men usually (all other things being equal), lose more weight than women. My advantage is that I am/was 15 years younger than him. At the time I was in college and had a meal ticket, so it was a matter of making better choices. It was a good size walking campus so there was already pretty good exercise.
Anyway, I ended up going on about a 700 calorie/day diet for those 4 weeks. I know, not good. Although I did lose more than my bro-in-law, I knew that last week that it was time to stop when my dormmate told me that one evening, as I was napping, I sat straight up in bed, looked at the wall, and exclaimed, "That man over there is counting my calories!" Then I laid back down and continued to sleep.

So, I also need to get on some plan. I appreciate you starting this thread, Hercules.
They say getting old is not for the faint hearted. It is also harder the weaker you are, and the less fit you are. So, no time like the present to try to get myself back together.
Plan: 1) Every night, walk in the halls. As there are 3 hallways on my floor, week 1=1 hallway; wk 2=2 halls; wk 3=3 halls. As this gets too easy, add halls. 2) As I pay an arm and a leg to live here, I need to start getting to all my "included" meals. and make healthy choices.
Well, here's hoping!

I welcome all that has been shared here
plus if it hasn't already been mentioned.
If you want to lose weight, keep a food diary.
Just as someone would be wise to do keep an account of their spending if they have trouble budgeting or someone with a drink problem monitoring their alcohol consumption .
