A wave of new research suggests social separation is bad for us. Individuals with less social connection have disrupted sleep patterns, altered immune systems, more inflammation and higher levels of stress hormones. One recent study found that isolation increases the risk of heart disease by 29 percent and stroke by 32 percent.
Another analysis that pooled data from 70 studies and 3.4 million people found that socially isolated individuals had a 30 percent higher risk of dying in the next seven years, and that this effect was largest in middle age.
Loneliness can accelerate cognitive decline in old
i just love the stress hormones

Cheers Paul for sharing further insightful stuff on this subject which is so dear to my heart for like you I don't socialize much more to do with preference rather than anything else.

Thx David. I don't really like socializing. I would rather be by myself, play and practice on my guitar. I am extremely happy doing just that. I get a lot of socialization at work on a daily basis. I just want to shut the door and everyone else out.

Coming here is different, for it is not in my own backyard... and therefore easy to pull the plug on at any given time should I feel the need to do so without explanation in terms of justifcation! lol

I believe the use of cell phones for texting, Facebook etc.. and video games are shutting off socializing these days. People spend lots of time staring at their phones these days. I feel sorry for children growing up in this era as they won't have the experiences of playing hide and seek and such fun things that we had as kids. I'm seeing kids as young as 4 years old with cell phones these days playing games on them.
I feel so fortunate to grow up in the era that I did. I was able to be a kid and enjoy playing like a kid should.

I don't think social isolation is the worst thing going...social confrontation seems more apropo for that role. We're being forced beyond our tribal (instinctive) attitudes into a PC world transcending our instincts and demanding ever greater cooperation...that many are incapable of providing. That dichotomy has manifested itself in our recent elections, nationalism=tribalism...and here we are. I'm just a bit unsure of which persona is in charge, the tribal chieftain (president)...or the shaman (showman)...perhaps both.
And of course, preferred isolation is worlds away from social ostracism...or incarceration. In a practical sense, it's a question of finding a job and lifestyle that suits you. Personally, it's a matter of qualifying for eccentric...or being burned for witchcraft.

I think, if we were to be honest, that we all dislike a lot of people. But hate is a strong word intended for exceptional moments and situations. I try to avoid hyperbole...it limits your future statements regarding any one subject.
As far as I'm concerned, religion is the source of most of this world's conflicts. If we'd all simply accept responsibility for our own lives and admit we can't possibly know what happens after death...we could get on with becoming civilized.
