"Oh, how I thought this topic of yours would prove none controversial... in that we would all be seeking a solution to your concern Hercules. How wrong I was!"
Just what concerns are there regarding our discourse? Are you worried about the FBI or CIA monitoring us for seditious content. Or is it the emotional sensibilities of our tiny group at the core of your...concerns. Do you seriously think anyone would bother with an obscure site using relatively mild and non confrontational discussion for amusement and communication. And as far as our members go, why do we have to restrict what is mild to begin with...just who are Paul and I offending? If we really wanted conciliation, would we start with divisive references to "Us and Them". You wanted a serious comment...there you go. David included me with Paul so I'm including you with him. Fair enough? No, in this instance I am not concerned with the FBI monitoring us. I am concerned that like many other sites, there has been bickering on this site, in many cases fueled by political differences. I don't know what outcome I want but would like for us to reach it together by bouncing around ideas in this thread. I think we have moved away from making a politics sub forum. Another possible solution is that we all become extremely good at learning to disagree with another person's views without playing the man. Don't take that anybody as a personal shortcoming - as I have stressed over and over I see this as a trend with our current times online. Keith, it occurs to me you may feel that personal bickering on this site has an alternative source but I would like to park that thought for the moment and just explore the political avenue for the time being as I believe that is a factor that can be addressed readily. Thanks Herc.

You are right about the trend. It reflects the outrage felt by thinking Americans as they watch their country and culture being shredded by a cowardly traitor and his Republican flunkies. That's not hyperbole Herc...he is just that. I'm not sure what you want here. I know Paul is part of the outrage but it's manageable and...not boring. I think many people are simply burning out on the anger and becoming hateful. I'm not hateful but I am burning out. I'm sick of feeling disgusted and ashamed of my political heritage. David and I agree on politics and most moral questions. We could carry on a good debate on the subject but instead...we quarrel like children. Why?...suppose you venture an opinion.

Foremostly I have been raised to respect people older than me. As such I have avoided developing an indepth analysis that could lead to anybody out of the two of you being at "fault". My belief is the source of your quarrels with David is Dr Long. Or rather the fact that he was largely absent as a moderator and only appeared once a month on the web site. My belief or memory is that you and David had about a million scraps on MT that went unmoderated. Both of you probably remember some of the ill natured comments that flew around. You both took no prisoners in some discussions by memory. On this site the die was already cast. And you each already had firm views of the other because of MT days. Occassionally the two of you would call a truce but it wouldn't be long before an old memory would be triggered, sometimes quite inadvertantly and innocently by the other party, and then the truce would fall apart. I just think too much has passed between the two of you at this stage. But never say never, if there is a long, long, period of peace where you both have each other on ignore then who knows. That is my answer to your question. For the record I think both of you are quality gentlemen. I want to tell an anecdote to emphasise that point. When I was living in Canada I came back to NZ for a 3 week visit. At one point I took a train ride to meet an old friend at station X at 7pm. Suddenly half way there I got quite scared. It was the late 1990s and I did not have a cell phone or twenty five cents to make a phone call if he didn't show up, and it would be hard for me and uncomfortable if he didn't turn up. Suddenly I stopped worrying. He would be there. He would come through for me. And indeed he was there waiting true to his word. Both you and David are the sorts would keep their word for an old friend and be there no matter what at station X to greet him. That is the highest praise I hand out to anybody.

Very good Herc, and thank you. I think you may be right...too much water under the bridge. Well, this place is part of my daily routine and I'll be here till I run out of daily. I consider you a gentleman too...you have my respect.
