Hi CC,
id like to get some information from you about ileus. I had abdominal pain that was pretty severe and had to go to the ER. After a cat scan they told me I had ileus but were going to treat it like constipation.
They have me on all these laxatives. I can barely eat and I'm losing weight fast. When I eat it hurts. It gives me abdominal pains. I have resorted to eating lots of small meals and pureeing my food.
They sent me home one instead of keeping me there with little info on what I'm supposed to be doing other than telling me to take the laxatives.
I was was wondering if you can fill me in on any tips here on how they treated your ileus when you had it.
They told mine is mild but it doesn't feel mild. I'm Hungary and starving and eating is hard anymore.

Hi, Chelle. I will try to help with writing. I had gone to the emergency room with pain somewhere either in the chest or abdomen. (It was 2 or 3 years ago.) The emergency room took X-rays and blood work (but not a CAT scan). The pain was "moderate." They told me I had ileus and admitted me for about 7 days. They put a tube in my nose and for about 5 days and sucked the stomach juices out of me (to prevent back up at the obstruction). After a few days I developed uncontrollable diarrhea and a few times a day made a mess in my hospital room. When I look back I am not sure I really had ileus. The pain was not severe, and also because a few months later I had another x-ray that showed possible ileus but on follow-up a CAT scan done this time was negative for ileus. During my 7 day stay for ileus they stopped my psychiatric meds, then I got quite sick mentally and could not recover for a few months. So I say be careful to get the correct evaluation. As for laxatives, I have been taking one teaspoon of Metamucil (sugar free) every day in water and I have not had any more problems since. I am never constipated. My family doctor ordered a Clostridium Difficile blood test a few months ago and it came back positive, so then he treated me with a course of Flagil, which is an antibiotic. It seems I was a carrier for this micro-organism. My GI doctor told me this bacterium is fairly serious. Do you have any more questions?

Chelle, Actually it was a stool culture, not a blood test, that revealed the Clostridium Difficile. Sorry to hear of your severe constipation. It is not exactly what I had.

Hi CC,
Thank you for the response. They checked me for cdiff as well but it came out negative . They did not admit me or put tube into my nose or stomach but told me we were treating it like constipation and have me on laxatives.
Maybe yours was much more severe than mine and the difference in treatment for the problem.
I'm having trouble eating. The doctors know but they are not really doing anything about it. It sounds like you were In good hands CC.
Thanks for sharing with me.

Hi Michelle and CP1
Just to say it is really nice that you are getting postive feedback from one another.
Proving that this website is a worthwhile addition, complimenting what other support we have from elsewhere.

I agree David. It's nice to get CC's view on his experience with ileus.
