Dr Long is probably mega loaded and was using those payments as tax write offs. He did it to be kind and generous as opposed to propping up the site with posts and traffic. I would be annoyed if I paid a membership fee to MT and it went towards things like that but as it was all Free I am cool with it. Anyways both of them are with us now off their own bat and are valued members of our group and they are "part of the furniture" (as they say in South Africa).
