It should go without saying that I am sorry to learn of your mobility difficulties Leigh.Most of us expect same in old age but you are not there yet, so such issues in middle age is very unfortunate. I agree with what you state about books and yes the characters therein become our friends.. depending on the role they play in the story.

Can I just report that the elevated toilet seat is the BEST thing, even better than sliced bread. No more wondering if I’m going to be able to get off the toilet! Seriously, HALLELUJAH!!!

Further to what you go on to share with us....
re your heightened toilet seat, I identify with
such a modification.
For in 2015, I am upgraded my bathroom,
which included a raised toilet and it works a treat
in terms of getting on and off same.
For the likes of you and me...
a good investment I would say!

I have went further by replacing the chair
I sit on most replaced with a taller seat.
because of knee bending issues. mainly
because of age related lack of agility.
I will replace other seating when I am
in a position to do so, subject to my life span. lol
